Call of Duty: Modern Warfare doesn't have the long-running and popular Zombies mode, developer Infinity Ward has confirmed.
Speaking to PlayStation Lifestyle, campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff said Modern Warfare was skipping Zombies mode because of the realistic tone of the game, as opposed to the more stylised tone of Treyarch's Black Ops series.

- Return of Zombie Ops is a zombie modification for Call of Duty 4, it features content from Black Ops Zombie mode aswell as from Modern Warfare 3 Survival mode and Ghosts Extinction mode. It's set slightly in the future with some weapons from Ghosts, Black.
- Arcade Mode: Our specially tweaked variant of traditional zombie gameplay, Arcade Mode includes 8+ new powerups and a special boss zombie round. Classic: Un-altered classic Call of Duty zombies, but with the UGX Mod's epic arsenal of weaponry at your disposal.
- The Special Ops game mode from Modern Warfare 2 is present in Modern Warfare 3, and includes new features which make it more replayable and similar to other game modes, such as Nazi Zombies from previous Call of Duty games, and Hordes from Gears of War. The two main Special Ops modes include one that is generally the same from the last Modern.

'Because they focus on more of the stylised, graphic novel, super-hero experience, they can have the much more 'out there' different types of gameplay in their games,' Minkoff said.

'But for us, we're trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world. We don't have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today's conflicts and things we face.'
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a reboot of sorts for the series. It takes established characters and puts them in a modern day setting that's described as dark, gritty and brutal. (For more, check out Digital Foundry's report on the tech powering Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.)
Unlike Black Ops 4, Modern Warfare has a campaign. It's got traditional competitive Call of Duty multiplayer, too, and we're promised a unified progression. In previous Call of Duty games, the developers have been able to go for quite a different experience tonally between modes. Zombies, typically, is an over-the-top, pulpy player versus environment experience, with traditional multiplayer and campaign quite different.
Minkoff said Infinity Ward said Modern Warfare is 'more similar across the different modes', and as a result is 'completely continuous'.
Replacing Zombies, then, is a co-op mode. The single-player storyline goes directly into the co-op storyline. 'No stop,' Minkoff said. 'The events just continue.' As does your progression.
Perhaps the news Modern Warfare doesn't have Zombies shouldn't come as much of a surprise. It's always been Treyarch's baby (the developer spawned the mode in 2008's Call of Duty: World at War), and while Infinity Ward has dabbled with it in the much-maligned Infinite Warfare, it's never really embraced Zombies.
Infinity Ward was once exploring a zombie mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, however, the idea never graduated past the conceptual stage. Taking to Instagram, Infinity Ward artist Aaron Beck confirmed previous rumors claiming Infinity Ward was considering a zombies mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. In a new post, Beck even revealed some of the concept art for the Zombies mode, which he notes is from 'early in production.'
The concept art doesn't reveal much, but does feature a Russian special forces soldier and his quadruped robots holding some zombies captive via leashes and forcing them to march. It's unclear why the soldier is doing this, but it does create for some nice concept art.
'Finally got clearance to share more art from Modern Warfare,' said Beck in the aforementioned Instagram post. 'So to begin here's an unused concept from early in production. I was thinking it would be fun to play with the classic Call of Duty zombie gameplay, hinting here at some sort of Russian special forces soldier and his duo of quadruped robots, holding captive zombified soldiers by leashes around their necks.'

In the past, Infinity Ward revealed that it opted from releasing a Zombies mode in the game in order to preserve it's 'authenticity' as a dark, gritty, and realistic take on what modern warfare looks like it. In its place, Infinity Ward released a Special Ops mode. And it sounds like this decision was made early, as Beck notes the mode never moved past the conceptual stage.
'We're trying to create an authentic, realistic feeling world,' said Infinity Ward at the time. 'We don't have the flexibility to do something like put zombies in the game. That would compromise the feeling of playing in a world that feels realistic and authentic and relative to today's conflicts and things we face.'
